In line with the commemoration of Air Pollution Prevention Week and to raise awareness about the importance of the issue, a scientific-cultural seminar on “Microplastic Pollution in the Air and Its Risks to Human Health” was held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in the Legal Clinic Hall.
This seminar, organized through the joint efforts of the Department of Culture, Invitation and Islamic Guidance, the Administrative and Financial Vice-Chancellor, and the Academic Vice-Chancellor of the university, commenced with the moderation of Rohullah Jafari and the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an by Shaheer Jawadi, a student of the university. It continued with a presentation by Mr. Jalil Karimi, respected Administrative and Financial Vice-Chancellor and faculty member of the Faculty of Economics.
At the beginning of his presentation, Professor Karimi appreciated the presence of the participants and highlighted the necessity and significance of the topic. He described microplastic pollution as a global challenge and a threat to national security, including in Afghanistan, that has led to various diseases, climate change, and environmental degradation at a crisis level.
Key points addressed in the seminar included the definition of microplastics and nano plastics, sources of microplastic exposure, pathways of their entry into the human body, the severity of air contamination with microplastics, their negative impacts on human physical and mental health, on fetuses, reproduction, and future generations, as well as strategies to reduce associated risks.Mr. Karimi recommended practical measures such as the use of purified water, consumption of organic and unpackaged food, reduction in the use of single-use plastics, adoption of natural fibers in clothing, and installation of air filters as effective ways to minimize risks.
